A cult Provençal red from Domaine de Trévallon, on the northern slopes of the Alpilles near Saint-Étienne-du-Grès. The estate was founded by Eloi Dürrbach - son of artists René Dürrbach and Jacqueline de la Baume Dürrbach (famous for their friendships with Picasso and Léger) - who planted the first vines in 1973 after dynamiting hills into vineyards. The first vintage was 1976, and the family continues the estate today with Eloi's children Antoine and Ostiane.
A 50/50 blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah grown on north-facing slopes of limestone, clay and garrigue. When the Baux-de-Provence AOC was created in 1991 with a cap on Cabernet Sauvignon, Trévallon refused to change the blend and was relegated to vin de pays status; since 2009 it has proudly carried the Alpilles IGP. Expect a deeply coloured, powerful yet elegant wine with ripe red and black fruits, white pepper, liquorice spice and garrigue, framed by very ripe, refined tannins and a long, polished finish.
Organically farmed with no fertilisers or chemical weed control. No destemming, no added yeasts, no sulphur during fermentation; fined with fresh egg white, unfiltered. Aged for around 24 months in foudres and barrels.
