The 2012 grand vin of Château Lafite Rothschild, a First Growth in the 1855 Classification from the north of the Pauillac appellation on Bordeaux's Left Bank. The Rothschild family has owned the estate since 1868. Its best vineyards sit on the 50-hectare Plateau des Carruades west of the château, the highest point in Pauillac, where well-drained clayey gravel soils suit Cabernet Sauvignon. About 4.5 hectares of old vines in neighbouring Saint-Estèphe also go into the grand vin.
A blend of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8.5% Merlot and 0.5% Petit Verdot. The nose starts closed, then the fruit opens up with a light touch of oak. The palate is tight and dense with a solid, compact core, fine and airy tannins, and a long, lingering finish.
2012 was a hard year in Bordeaux: a wet spring, an April hailstorm and uneven ripening meant a lot of sorting. Only 38% of the harvest made it into the grand vin. Depending on the plot, grapes were fermented in wooden, stainless steel or concrete vats, with maceration of about 20 days. The wine then went into French oak barrels from the estate's own cooperage, and after blending it was aged for a further 20 months, mostly in new oak.
