Château Mouton Rothschild stands on one of the highest gravel banks in Pauillac, with more than 80 hectares of vines on deep, coarse gravel over marl and limestone. Classified a Second Growth in 1855, it was elevated to First Growth in 1973 after a long campaign by Baron Philippe de Rothschild, the only change ever made to the original classification.
Cabernet Sauvignon accounts for roughly four fifths of the plantings, filled out with Merlot and smaller parcels of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The fruit is hand picked and the grand vin is matured entirely in new French oak barrels from the estate's own cooperage, generally for nineteen to twenty two months.
The house style is richer and more exotic than its Pauillac neighbours. Cassis and dark berry fruit are wrapped in cedar, graphite, tobacco leaf and sweet spice, carried on a plush mid palate with long, firm tannins built for decades in the cellar.
Every vintage since 1945 carries a label whose upper panel was commissioned from a different artist, a series that has included Braque, Picasso, Warhol and Freud, and which has made each release as collectable as it is drinkable.
