Château Lafite Rothschild is one of the four original First Growths of the 1855 Classification and one of the most recognised names in Pauillac. The property has been in Rothschild hands since Baron James Mayer Rothschild bought it in 1868, and its vineyard covers a little over 100 hectares on fine, free-draining gravel in the north of the commune.
Plantings are dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, with a quarter given to Merlot and small parcels of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The grand vin is a strict selection, usually built on 80 to 95 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon, and is matured in new French oak barrels coopered at the estate for up to twenty months. Fruit that does not make the cut goes into the second wine, Carruades de Lafite.
Lafite's signature is perfume and poise rather than sheer power. Cedar, graphite and pencil shavings frame cassis and darker berry fruit, with violets and fine spice, while the palate is built on silky, tightly woven tannins and a long, understated finish. It is a wine made for the cellar, and the best years hold for decades.
