Château La Mission Haut-Brion is a Cru Classé de Graves in Pessac-Léognan, its vineyard straddling the communes of Talence and Pessac just across the road from Château Haut-Brion. The property was shaped by the Lestonnac family in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries before passing in 1682 to the Lazarist Order, the Priests of the Mission, who gave the estate its name and built the chapel of Notre-Dame d'Aubrion in 1698. Domaine Clarence Dillon, owners of Haut-Brion since 1935, acquired La Mission in 1983 and has since rebuilt the vat room, cellars and château. Around 25 hectares are planted to red varieties on the deep gravel soils that define this corner of the Graves.
The 2014 is built on roughly 54% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, with a small portion of Cabernet Franc. It is a classically proportioned wine, with dark berry fruit, cassis and plum framed by graphite, tobacco leaf, woodsmoke and the scorched earth character that has long been the estate's signature. The palate is medium to full-bodied, with fine-grained tannins, bright acidity and a long, savoury finish. It rewards cellaring and should continue to develop for two decades or more.
Fermentation takes place in large temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, with the final blend assembled shortly after malolactic fermentation and before barrel maturation begins. The wine is then aged in 100% new French oak for around 22 months.
