Château Cos d'Estournel is a Second Growth of the 1855 Classification, sitting on the gravel ridge at the southern boundary of Saint-Estèphe, looking directly across at Lafite in Pauillac. Its pagoda topped chai is the most recognisable building in the Médoc, built by Louis Gaspard d'Estournel, whose trade with the East earned him the nickname the Maharajah of Saint-Estèphe.
The vineyard covers around 100 hectares of gravel over clay and limestone, planted to roughly 56 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon and 40 per cent Merlot with small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wine is matured for about eighteen months in French oak, typically half to sixty per cent of it new.
The generous share of Merlot gives Cos a silky, almost exotic character within the firm frame of the commune. Dark cassis and black cherry come with cedar, sandalwood, mocha and sweet spice, and the tannins are dense but finely polished. It is built for long ageing.
