Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild is the second wine of Château Mouton Rothschild, drawn largely from the younger vines of the First Growth vineyard on the gravel plateau north of Pauillac. It was launched in the early 1990s and is made with the same care as the grand vin, from the same holdings and the same team.
The blend is led by Cabernet Sauvignon and filled out with Merlot, with small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot in some years. Fermentation takes place in the estate's oak vats and the wine is matured in French oak barrels, typically around half of them new, before bottling.
It shows the Mouton signature in a more immediate register: cassis, blackberry and dark plum lifted by cedar, graphite and sweet spice, with supple tannins and a polished finish. Approachable earlier than the grand vin, it still has the frame to develop over many years.
