Château Calon Ségur is a Third Growth of the 1855 Classification and the northernmost classed growth of Saint-Estèphe, its vineyard enclosed by a wall on the gravel rise at the edge of the village. The red heart on the label recalls the Marquis de Ségur, who owned Lafite and Latour in the eighteenth century and is said to have declared that his heart lay at Calon.
The estate covers around 55 hectares, with gravel over a clay subsoil that gives the wine its grip and depth. Cabernet Sauvignon leads the blend, with Merlot and small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, and the wine is matured for close to twenty months in French oak with a generous share of new barrels.
Calon Ségur is built for the long haul. Deep blackcurrant and plum fruit sit under cedar, graphite and fine spice, with firm but polished tannins and a savoury, mineral finish. It is tightly wound when young and unfolds steadily over many years in bottle.
