Château Montrose is a Second Growth of the 1855 Classification, occupying a gravel rise in Saint-Estèphe that runs right down to the Gironde estuary. The proximity of the water moderates the vineyard's temperature and is a large part of what gives the wine its consistency, and the property has been owned by the Bouygues family since 2006.
Around 95 hectares are planted, dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon at about 60 per cent with Merlot taking most of the remainder and small parcels of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wine is matured in French oak barrels with a high proportion of new wood.
Montrose is the most powerful expression of Saint-Estèphe, often compared with Latour for its density and structure. Concentrated cassis and black plum sit beneath cedar, iron and graphite, with a firm tannic spine and remarkable length. It demands patience and repays it, holding well for decades in the best years.
