Founded in Reims in 1760, Lanson is one of the oldest and most singular of the great Champagne houses. Its defining trait is the decision to avoid malolactic fermentation, preserving the natural acidity of its fruit to create wines that are fresh, precise and built to age. Le Vintage, the house's vintage Brut, is made only in the best years and rests for at least a decade on lees, gathering complexity while holding on to its hallmark tension.
The 2014 blends 54 percent Pinot Noir with 46 percent Chardonnay and pours a bright, dazzling gold. The nose is intense and generous, with vibrant candied citrus threaded through delicate nougat and praline. On the palate it stays intensely fruity, showing candied lemon and marzipan before a fine, lingering finish.
Serve well chilled as a celebratory aperitif, or match it with shellfish, sushi or lightly creamy poultry dishes. A white wine glass will show off its aromatic detail.
