A single-cru Barbaresco from Ca' del Baio, the four-generation Grasso family estate based in Treiso. The family's connection to Treiso dates to 1870 when Giuseppe Grasso purchased the Cascina Vallegranda farmhouse; today owner Giulio Grasso runs the estate with his wife Luciana and their three daughters Paola, Valentina and Federica. The estate covers around 28 hectares across the villages of Barbaresco and Treiso. Sustainable farming.
100% Nebbiolo from the Valgrande (Vallegrande) cru surrounding the estate in Treiso, on bluish clayey-limestone marl with a high percentage of sand, at around 320 metres with a south/south-west exposure. Vines were planted between 1967 and 1995. Valgrande is one of Barbaresco's most historic crus - gave Ca' del Baio its first single-cru Barbaresco (vinified separately by Giulio's father Ernesto in 1965) - and gives austere, deep, savoury Nebbiolo with citric thyme, Mediterranean scrub, tobacco leaf, dried flower and blood orange, powerful and fine at once.
Hand-harvested in early October. Traditional destemmed skins fermentation for 7–15 days in temperature-controlled stainless steel with native yeasts. Aged around 24 months in large Slavonian oak casks, then 6 months in bottle before release.
