Bicknell FC is the small Yarra Valley label founded in 2011 by winemaker Dave Bicknell, who spent close to 25 years as chief winemaker at Oakridge, and his partner, viticulturist Nicky Harris. The label focuses on fruit from a handful of characterful sites, and this Close Planted Pinot Noir comes from the Lance block at St Andrews, planted in 1989 at around 8,300 vines per hectare, one of the tightest plantings in Victoria at the time.
The wine is intensely fragrant, with strawberry and cherry fruit, alpine herbs and white pepper. The palate is silky and focused, carrying more depth and drive than the Applecross Pinot Noir without any heaviness, and finishing long with very fine tannins and a gentle bitter herb note.
The fruit was hand picked, and the ferment was pumped over twice daily before being foot stomped towards the end to help extraction. After pressing, the wine spent 11 months on lees in a few small oak barrels, completed malolactic conversion and was bottled in early 2026. Only a tiny quantity was made.
