Dry Red Wine No. 1 is the flagship of Yarra Yering — a cabernet-based blend first conceived by founder Bailey Carrodus from the original 1969 plantings. The 2023 is made up of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 15% Malbec and 5% Petit Verdot, with the Cabernet drawn from those heritage vines and the balance sourced from neighbouring blocks.
Each parcel is treated individually — whole-berry ferments for fragrance, open-top fermenters for texture, a mix of new and seasoned oak, with a third of the Cabernet spending eight weeks on skins in a 3,500L oak cask. The wine shows aromas of blackcurrant, blood plum, cedar, dried herbs, mocha and graphite, leading onto a plush, medium- to full-bodied palate with bright acidity, super-refined tannins, and a long, textural finish.
Marking winemaker Sarah Crowe's 10th vintage at the estate, this is Yarra Yering at the very top of its game — drinkable now, cellar-worthy for decades.
