Château Phélan Ségur lies on the gravel slopes at the southern edge of the village of Saint-Estèphe, with neighbours including Montrose and Calon Ségur. The estate takes its name from Bernard Phelan, an Irish merchant who brought two earlier properties together in the nineteenth century to create what was then the largest vineyard in the appellation.
Around 70 hectares of well drained gravel run down towards the Gironde. Cabernet Sauvignon makes up close to 60 per cent of the plantings with Merlot taking most of the balance and small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Maturation is in French oak barrels, with roughly half of them new.
Long regarded as one of the leading properties of Saint-Estèphe outside the 1855 Classification, Phélan Ségur offers dark berry and plum fruit with cedar, tobacco and a fine mineral edge. The tannins are firm yet supple, which makes it more approachable in its youth than many wines of the commune while still ageing comfortably for two decades.
