Writers’ Tears comes from this whole idea that back in the day, Irish writers - like James Joyce, Oscar Wilde, all the big names - were basically fuelled by whiskey. If they hit writer’s block or were drowning in emotions, they’d pour a glass, let it all out, and keep going. The poetic twist? If they cried, their tears might as well have been whiskey.

The name plays into that romanticized connection between Ireland’s literary greats and the golden age of Irish whiskey. Bernard Walsh, the guy behind it, wanted to bring back some of that old-school whiskey style - so he made Writers’ Tears a mix of single pot still and single malt, which is exactly the kind of stuff those writers would’ve been drinking before Irish whiskey took a dive in the 20th century.

It’s a cool nod to both the whiskey and the writers.

Our single cask of Writers' Tears is an Inniskillin Ice Wine Cask - a limited-edition Irish whiskey finished in Canadian Ice Wine casks. This unique maturation adds layers of rich sweetness and fruit complexity. Here are some tasting and nosing notes:

Nose:

Honey-drizzled peaches and apricots
Green apples and ripe pears
Hints of white grapes and candied citrus peel
Light floral notes with a touch of vanilla
A subtle, sweet wine influence with soft oak spice

Palate:

Lush, velvety mouthfeel with a burst of orchard fruits
Notes of honeyed malt, caramel, and vanilla bean
Golden raisins, dried apricots, and a touch of marmalade
A gentle spice from the oak and a slight nuttiness
The ice wine cask influence adds a syrupy sweetness, balanced by zesty acidity

Finish:

Medium to long, with lingering notes of honey, stone fruit, and white chocolate
A gentle warmth with hints of cinnamon and toasted oak
A final wave of sweet wine and dried fruit

This cask yielded 600 bottles, and we had to beg, borrow and steal to get 112 bottles for our shores.

It’s a beautifully balanced whiskey, with the ice wine cask adding a distinctive fruit-forward richness without overpowering the delicate Irish whiskey character.
