Weingut von Hövel is a historic Saar estate housed in a 12th-century former abbey retreat of the St Maximin monastery of Trier, located in Konz-Oberemmel in the Konzer Tälchen side valley of the Saar. The property has been in the same family since 1803 and is run today by seventh-generation Maximilian von Kunow, who took over from his father Eberhard in 2010. Max has nearly doubled the estate's holdings to around 20 hectares, farmed organically, with 87% planted to Riesling on Devonian slate soils.
The Saar Riesling Trocken 2022 is the estate's VDP. Gutswein entry-level dry Riesling, sourced mostly from the Oberemmeler Rosenberg, a site with good drainage ideally suited to this dry style.
The single-vineyard wines at von Hövel are matured in old Fuder barrels, and Max favours spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts and extended lees contact across the range. The result is a dry Riesling with crystalline tension, bright citrus and a mineral drive that captures the Saar's cool, slate-driven character.
