Weingut Wagner-Stempel is a leading Rheinhessen estate in Siefersheim, farmed by nine generations of the Wagner family and run today by Daniel Wagner. The estate works around 20 hectares certified organic since 2008, with Riesling at the heart of its range. Daniel has been pivotal in elevating Siefersheim's volcanic Heerkretz and Höllberg sites to the top tier of German Riesling.
Höllberg is a VDP.Grosse Lage and one of Daniel's flagship sites, a south to south-east-facing hillside of around one kilometre at 160-220 metres elevation. The soils are weathered quartz porphyry (rhyolite) laid down over 250 million years ago, with only a thin loam covering. The central core of the site belongs to Wagner-Stempel, and the parcels used for the GG (Becker, Lenz and Auf der Mauer) represent the very top of the hill, where Riesling works through the stony soil.
The 2022 Höllberg GG shows yellow-fruited generosity and power with peach and nectarine aromas, a fleshy, tender-textured palate and striking oiliness. It is the most accessible of the estate's three GGs, yet carries exceptional length and ageing potential — Daniel chose a steel-focused approach for 2022, with around two-thirds in stainless and one-third in large oak.
