This Pommard Vieilles Vignes is a village blend from four climats within Pommard: Vaumuriens, Noizons, En Mareaux and La Croix Planet. The Pinot Noir vines average around 65 years of age and are rooted in the clay-limestone soils that give Pommard its reputation as one of the most structured red wines of the Côte de Beaune.
Fruit is hand-harvested and sorted twice, in the vineyard and again on the sorting table, then mostly destemmed, with the share of whole bunches adjusted each year. After a few days of cold maceration and a temperature-controlled ferment, the wine is aged for around 15 months in 228 litre barrels, roughly 30% new, before being bottled without fining and with only a light filtration.
The nose shows black fruit and spice with smoky, toasty oak. The palate is powerful and well built, with firm yet well-integrated tannins and good aromatic persistence. It is a natural partner for coq au vin, red meats, game, terrine and a range of cheeses.
The house was started in 1980 by Vincent Girardin, a Santenay native from a winegrowing family dating back to the 17th century. Since 2012 it has been owned by Jean-Pierre Nié of the Compagnie des Vins d'Autrefois in Beaune, with winemaker Eric Germain, in the cellar since the early 2000s, maintaining the house style.
