Vincent Girardin's Chassagne-Montrachet Vieilles Vignes comes from two village climats, Les Battaudes and La Bergerie. The Chardonnay vines average around 50 years of age, grow on clay-limestone soils and are pruned in the Guyot Poussard style, with disbudding, trellising and topping carried out through the season.
Fruit is picked by hand with sorting in the vineyard, lightly crushed and pressed, then settled and fermented in 228 litre French oak barrels, 15% new, on indigenous yeasts and bacteria. The wine is aged for around 15 months on its fine lees without lees stirring and bottled according to the lunar calendar after a light fining and filtration.
The nose is intense with ripe yellow fruits such as peach and apricot. On the palate, generous, enveloping richness is held in precise balance by mineral freshness. Pair it with sole meunière, white meats, or grilled or sauced fish.
Vincent Girardin, from a Santenay winegrowing family dating to the 17th century, founded the house in 1980 at the age of 19. Today it is run from Meursault by a small, long-serving team led by winemaker Eric Germain.
