From Vie di Romans, a Gallo-family estate (no relation to the California Gallo) in the heart of the Friuli Isonzo DOC in northeastern Italy, between the town of Collio and the Adriatic Sea. The domaine takes its name from the ancient Roman road that once passed through the vineyard, connecting Aquileia and Cividale. Gianfranco Gallo has run the estate since 1978 and is widely regarded as one of the leading white wine producers of Friuli, known for late-harvesting fruit and a longer pre-release ageing than most of his peers.
The estate's flagship Chardonnay is sourced from estate vineyards on gravel and clay soils in Friuli Isonzo. The wine is fermented and aged on its lees for around nine months, drawing creamy texture and depth without malolactic fermentation. Expect a complex, mineral-driven Chardonnay with honeysuckle, white flowers, citrus, stone fruit, toasted nut and a touch of fennel, on a textured, finely balanced palate carried by bright acidity.
The Bora and Sirocco winds give the vineyards a long, healthy growing season with no need for pesticides against rot. After hand-harvesting, the Chardonnay is aged for around nine months on the fine lees before bottling.
