Valdicava is one of the great names of Montalcino. The estate sits in the northern part of the zone and is run by Vincenzo Abbruzzese, whose wines are spoken about in the same breath as the region's most storied producers. This is the estate Brunello, drawn from across the property's holdings and made entirely from Sangiovese.
As Brunello di Montalcino requires, the wine spends five years maturing before release, a good portion of that in large oak, which softens the edges without stripping away the structure that makes these wines age so gracefully.
The aromatics are wildly expressive, with violets, fresh strawberry and ripe cherry lifted by menthol, pine and a wet stone note underneath. Cedar and sandalwood arrive with air, along with orange and lemon blossom. The palate is medium to full bodied, muscular yet agile, built on a web of fine tannins and a vibrant core of acidity that carries a long, clear finish. Give it a generous decant, or cellar it and be rewarded. Serve with bistecca, wild game or aged pecorino.
