Shaw + Smith was established in 1989 by cousins Martin Shaw, Bordeaux-trained winemaker, and Michael Hill Smith MW, the first Australian to pass the Master of Wine exams. The winery has built its reputation on elegant, cool-climate wines made exclusively from fruit grown in the Adelaide Hills, with chief winemaker Adam Wadewitz at the helm of the winemaking team.
The Balhannah Vineyard was planted in 2005 with low-yielding Shiraz clones at a close-planted density of around 5,500 vines per hectare, sitting at 340-380 metres elevation. The site has a north-facing aspect with soils of loam over clay, ironstone, quartzite and shale, producing a Shiraz of pepper and spice aromatics reminiscent of the northern Rhône.
The 2023 is hand-picked and hand-sorted, with whole bunches used to excellent effect, adding lift and aromatic intensity. It is aged for 14 months in 500 to 600 litre French oak barrels (around 15% new) and a further period in bottle, giving a cool-climate Shiraz of fragrant black pepper, sage, bay leaf and star anise over a core of ripe plum and blue fruit, with firm, refreshing tannins.
