Sailor Seeks Horse is a small Huon Valley estate in southern Tasmania, owned and run by Paul and Gilli Lipscombe. The pair bought the neglected 6.5-hectare vineyard in 2010 after vintages in the Languedoc, Oregon, Margaret River and New Zealand, restoring the site into one of Tasmania's most exciting producers.
The vineyard is planted on a north-east facing slope sheltered from the prevailing south-westerly wind, with free-draining quartz-inflected mudstone over clay. The Pinot Noir blocks feature six clones: 114, 115, MV6, 777, 2051 (D5V12) and 8048 (D2V6). All vineyard work is done with an organic outlook.
The 2024 Pinot Noir is the product of a warm, exceptionally dry season with yields down to around 2 tonnes per hectare. Made with 5% whole bunch and featuring the 8048 and 2051 clones, it carries a sappy autumnal edge with dark cherry and high-toned spice, a plush but structural feel and a deeper, more concentrated presence than typical cooler-year releases. A complex, site-driven Tasmanian Pinot Noir with real stature.
