Les Grands Blancs is a blanc de blancs drawn from four of the great Chardonnay villages of the Côte des Blancs: Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Oger, Avize and Cramant, all classified grand cru. Bringing them together gives a Champagne with both the steely chalk drive of Le Mesnil and the softer, more floral character of Cramant and Avize.
Champagne Robert Moncuit began in 1889 when Alex Moncuit acquired his first vineyards in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. His grandson Robert started producing Champagne under his own name in 1928, working only with Chardonnay from grand cru terroir, and the house is run today by Pierre Amillet, the fourth generation of the family, farming around ten hectares on organic principles.
Finished as an extra brut with minimal dosage, it is precise and refreshing. Citrus, green apple and white blossom lead, with fine patisserie and toasted almond notes from time on lees, a delicate mousse and a long, chalky, saline finish. An excellent aperitif and a natural match for oysters, shellfish and light seafood.
