Réserve de la Comtesse is the second wine of Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande in Pauillac, one of the most celebrated estates on the left bank. It made its commercial debut in 1973 and has since become a benchmark for the category, drawn from the same holdings as the grand vin and accounting for a meaningful share of the property's annual production.
The fruit comes from the estate's Günzian gravel mounds over clay and limestone subsoils, with parcels farmed organically and biodynamically. The blend is led by Cabernet Sauvignon and filled out with Merlot and Petit Verdot, sometimes with a touch of Cabernet Franc. Maturation runs to roughly twelve months in French oak barrels, about half of them new.
Expect a perfumed Pauillac profile: cedar and liquorice over blackcurrant, blackberry and violet, then a palate of strawberry and cherry carried by smooth, powdery tannins. It is polished and approachable earlier than the grand vin, while keeping the structure to reward time in the cellar.
