Lake's Folly is the modern Hunter Valley's first boutique winery, founded by Sydney surgeon Max Lake in 1963 on a small parcel above the Brokenback Range. Today the estate produces just two wines, both grown entirely on the original vineyard: a chardonnay and the famed Cabernets blend that put it on the map.
The 2024 Cabernets is a Bordeaux-style blend aged in French oak and sealed under screwcap. The nose is perfumed and lifted, with mulberry, blackberry and raspberry layered over violet florals and a brush of cedar. The palate carries the same dark berry weight through smooth mid-palate fruit, gentle toasty oak and fine cedary tannins, finishing with the seamless length the estate is known for.
A serious Hunter Valley red built for the cellar but already approachable in its youth. Pair with rare beef, slow-roasted lamb shoulder or aged hard cheeses.
