Poli Sarpa Oro Barrique is an aged Italian grappa from Poli Distillerie, a family-owned distillery founded in 1898 in Schiavon, near Bassano del Grappa in the Veneto region. This is the heartland of grappa, and the Poli family has spent generations refining the craft. The name Sarpa comes from the Venetian dialect word for grape marc, the pressed skins and seeds left after winemaking that form the raw material for grappa.
It is distilled in small batches from the marc of Merlot and Cabernet grapes, using traditional copper stills. The spirit is then matured in 225 litre oak barriques resting in the distillery cellars, which gives the Oro (gold) expression its bright golden colour and rounded character.
Expect aromas of exotic fruit, vanilla, almond and toasted hazelnut, with a gentle thread of liquorice. The palate is warm, velvety and long, making it a refined after-dinner pour. Serve at around 18 to 20 degrees in a tulip glass to let the aromatics open.
