Margheria is the most elegant of Pira Luigi's Serralunga crus. A gentle, south facing slope of just a hectare and a half, with calcareous clay soils and vines approaching seventy years of age, it gives a Barolo that leads with perfume and finesse rather than sheer muscle.
The nose is classic and immediately appealing: dried rose, red cherry, sweet spice and a hint of orange peel, gathering savoury notes of tobacco and forest floor with air. On the palate it is poised and beautifully balanced, the tannins fine grained and the acidity keeping the whole thing bright through a long, gently mineral finish.
The Pira family founded the estate in the early 1950s and farm twelve hectares in the commune of Serralunga d'Alba, with a total output that stays deliberately modest. Excellent with veal, roast poultry, agnolotti or a well aged cheese, and it will continue to develop happily in the cellar.
