Pieve Santa Restituta is the Gaja family's estate in Montalcino, purchased in 1994 and the family's first move beyond Barbaresco and Barolo since the business was founded in 1859. The estate takes its name from the ancient parish church, or pieve, that stands in the middle of the property, with foundations dating back to the 4th century AD.
This is the estate's classic Brunello di Montalcino, made entirely from Sangiovese and drawing on the family's Montalcino holdings. Part of the fruit comes from the Rennina and Sugarille vineyards, where the clay and limestone soils carry a high proportion of galestro, the crumbly schistous rock prized in Tuscany. It is blended with fruit from Torrenieri in the north-east of the appellation, where the ground is a mix of clay, tuff and sand. Fermentation and maceration run for around three weeks, then the wine spends 24 months in oak and a further six months in concrete vats before bottling.
The 2021 season began with a mild, wet winter and a cold, dry spring, followed by a cool May and June that slowed the vines. Summer was warm without extreme peaks, and rain at the end of August helped the grapes ripen while wide swings between day and night temperatures carried through September, with picking in the second half of the month. The wine opens with flinty mineral notes, nutmeg and bergamot alongside delicate florals and rosehip. The palate is juicy and medium to full bodied, warm and gently spicy, with freshness balancing the structure and a savoury, persistent finish recalling ripe plums.
