From Pierro, the celebrated Margaret River estate established in 1980 by Mike Peterkin in the Willyabrup sub-region of Western Australia. A medical graduate turned winemaker, Mike pioneered high-density planting in Margaret River and built Pierro's reputation on Chardonnay of monumental power and silky delivery, with the Pierro Chardonnay listed in Langton's Classification of Australian Wine.
The VR (Vintage Reserve) Chardonnay is made only in exceptional vintages and is a barrel selection of the best ten barrels from the season. The fruit comes entirely from the Gin-Gin clone, planted on rocky lateritic gravel soils in close-spaced rows. Expect a rich, opulent yet finely poised Chardonnay with stone fruit, white peach, butterscotch, citrus, lees-derived creaminess and a sustained, mineral-edged finish built for cellaring.
Hand-picked and barrel fermented, with full malolactic fermentation, regular lees stirring and extended maturation in French oak. The wine is released only after extended bottle ageing.
