Les Saugettes is a parcel of Chardonnay planted in 1970 on the lieu-dit of Grusse in the southern Jura, on calcareous and marly soils. Chardonnay has been grown in this part of France for centuries and behaves quite differently here to the way it does on the Côte d'Or, giving a wine that is leaner in profile and more overtly saline, with the marl adding a savoury grip.
Expect citrus, green apple and white blossom on the nose, with a light nutty note from time in barrel. The palate is fresh and finely built, with a chalky texture, a distinctly salty edge and a dry, persistent finish that leaves the mouth watering.
Pierre-Vincent Girardin, son of Vincent Girardin and thirteenth generation of a Burgundian family, set up his own domaine at Meursault in 2016. His Jura wines sit under a Vin de France label and are made with the same natural fermentations and large format oak as everything else in his cellar.
Vintages may vary. Email us at hello@barrelandbatch.com.au if you would like confirmation.
