St Henri represents a time-honored and distinctive interpretation of Shiraz, offering an intriguing counterpoint to Grange. This wine distinguishes itself among high-quality Australian reds by eschewing the use of new oak. First released by Penfolds in the early 1950s, with its inaugural commercial vintage in 1957, St Henri experienced a renaissance in the 1990s as its quality and unique style garnered greater appreciation. Remarkably, it has steadfastly resisted the pressures of fashion and commercial trends. In its youth, St Henri is rich and plush, evolving to exhibit soft, earthy, mocha-like characteristics as it ages. The maturation process occurs in an array of old large vats, which allow for development while imparting minimal oak influence. Although a small proportion of Cabernet may occasionally be included in the blend, Shiraz remains the focal point of St Henri.
