Ornellaia is one of Italy's iconic estates, founded in 1981 by Marchese Lodovico Antinori in Bolgheri on the Tuscan coast and owned since 2005 by the Frescobaldi family. The property draws on marine, alluvial and volcanic soils, with parcels spread across plots including Bellaria, Bellaria Nuova, Vigna Vecchia and Stallina.
The 2022 Bolgheri Superiore is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 10% Petit Verdot, unusual for the elevated presence of Petit Verdot, which performed particularly well in this vintage. The wine shows vibrant aromas of blackberry, blueberry and violet layered with nuances of cedar, graphite and dark chocolate. The palate is rich yet refined, with flavours of ripe plum, espresso and spice supported by silky tannins and a long, mineral-driven finish. 2022 brought a full-bodied style with concentrated fruit following a hot, arid summer and well-timed August rains.
Fermented in stainless steel with 10-15 days' maceration, the wine is aged for 18 months in French oak barrels (70% new, 30% used once), blended after 12 months and given a further 12 months' resting before release.
