Ornellaia is one of Italy's iconic estates, established in 1981 by Marchese Lodovico Antinori in Bolgheri on the Tuscan coast and owned since 2005 by the Frescobaldi family. The property sits on a mosaic of marine, alluvial and volcanic soils, with vineyards planted primarily to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
The 2021 Bolgheri Superiore is a blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 7% Petit Verdot. Despite a hot, dry summer with three months of drought, the vines drew on water reserves from winter and spring rain, resulting in a wine that is intense, fresh and vertical in character, with fine, ripe, round tannins. The nose shows signature notes of Mediterranean shrub, herbs, cypress berries, classic blackberry and dark fruit, while the palate is rich and concentrated with a vibrant, enduring finish. Alcohol is around 15%.
The varieties are fermented in stainless steel and concrete, with malolactic fermentation taking place mainly in barrel (70% new, 30% second-use). The wine is aged about 18 months in barrique, blended after 12 months and given a further period in bottle before release.
