Ngeringa sits in the Adelaide Hills, where Erinn and Janet Klein have farmed biodynamically since planting their first vines in 2001. The land has been certified biodynamic since 1993, when it was the herb farm behind the Jurlique skincare business founded by Erinn's parents, and the property now runs to some 75 hectares of vines, olives, orchards, vegetables and livestock.
The Iluma vineyard lies about two kilometres from the home block at Nairne, on the northern slope of the Mount Barker summit at roughly 420 metres, facing west on lean, textured soils of micaceous schist and ironstone over clay. Most of the estate's Viognier and Syrah is planted here, and the Kleins regard it as the most exciting ground they farm.
Viognier from a site this cool and this lean is a very different animal to the broad, blowsy version the variety is known for. Apricot and white flowers lead on the nose, but the palate is dry and taut, with real texture, a savoury phenolic grip and a long rather than heavy finish. Serve it with roast pork, gently spiced dishes, chicken or richer seafood.
Vintages may vary. Email us at hello@barrelandbatch.com.au if you would like confirmation.
