Mount Mary is a family-owned, single-vineyard estate in the heart of Victoria's Yarra Valley, established in 1971 by Doctor John and Marli Middleton. It was one of the first vineyards planted in the modern revival of the region. Today the estate is run by the Middleton family, with grandson Sam Middleton as winemaker since 2011, producing wines under three labels: Mount Mary Vineyard, Marli Russell and Réflexion. All wines are estate-grown and made on site.
The Marli Russell label is named in honour of co-founder Marli Middleton, and showcases a 'Rhône project' planting begun in 2008 with seven varieties from the southern Rhône. RP1 is a white blend of Marsanne, Roussanne and Clairette, barrel-fermented and lees-stirred for texture and depth. Expect a fine-boned, savoury white with stone fruit, citrus, white flowers and a hint of beeswax over a textural, complex palate.
The estate prioritises soil health and biodiversity, with composting and minimal-intervention viticulture, and more than half the property dedicated to native conservation and revegetation. All winemaking takes place on site, with hand-harvesting and bottling under one roof.
