Luigi Baudana is a tiny estate of around six and a half acres in Serralunga d'Alba, sitting in some of the most prestigious crus of the village. Luigi and his wife Fiorina farmed the property for three decades before bringing in Aldo Vaira of G.D. Vajra to help with the cellar in 2005. The Vaira family took on full management in 2009 and continue to bottle Luigi's wines separately under his name.
Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d'Alba is the entry point to the range, a village-level Barolo blended from younger-vine fruit drawn from the family's Baudana, Cerretta and Costabella holdings. It captures the firm, structured house style of the Serralunga commune at a more accessible price point than the single-cru bottlings.
The 2019 is firm and finely poised, with rose, rusty nail, autumnal leaf, licorice and tar lifting from the glass over a layered palate of dark red fruit, sage, mint, leather and spice. The structure is taut and savoury, in the somewhat austere style of the vintage, and the wine will reward patient cellaring through to the mid-2040s.
