L'If is a small Saint-Émilion property bought in 2010 by Jacques Thienpont, the owner of Le Pin in Pomerol. The name means yew tree, echoing the pine that gives Le Pin its name, and the estate is now looked after by his cousin Cyrille Thienpont.
The vineyard runs to around eight hectares on the limestone plateau at the eastern edge of the appellation, neighbouring Troplong Mondot and Pavie Macquin, with fine views over the medieval village. Merlot dominates the plantings with Cabernet Franc making up the balance, and the wine is raised for twelve to sixteen months in French oak, roughly half of it new.
Production is tiny, which has given the wine a devoted following. The style is precise and vibrant: dark cherry and plum with violets, graphite and a chalky, mineral lift from the limestone, supple tannins and a long, fresh finish. It can be enjoyed young and holds well for ten to fifteen years.
