Château Figeac lies at the western edge of Saint-Émilion, next to Cheval Blanc, and is one of the largest and most distinctive estates of the appellation. Its 40 hectares of vines sit on three Günzian gravel outcrops over a clay subsoil, a left bank style terroir that is rare on this side of the river.
Those gravels explain the unusual blend: Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc each account for around a third of the plantings, with Merlot making up the rest, a far higher share of Cabernet than almost anywhere else in Saint-Émilion. The wine is matured for fifteen to eighteen months in new French oak.
Figeac is aristocratic and finely structured. Cassis, red cherry and violets come with cedar, graphite, tobacco and a cool gravelly edge, and the tannins are firm and finely drawn rather than plush. It repays patience and ages for several decades.
