The Kooyong Single Block Faultline Chardonnay 2021 is grown on a small block of deep clay soils bounded by a geological fault at Kooyong's Tuerong vineyard on the Mornington Peninsula. With more clay and less ironstone than the nearby Farrago block, Faultline consistently produces the richer and more generous of Kooyong's two single block Chardonnays.
The fruit was whole-bunch pressed into French oak barriques and fermented spontaneously with ambient yeasts, then aged on lees for 11 months with no bâtonnage. This minimal approach preserves the site's natural texture and concentration.
White nectarine, white flowers, lime juice and crystallised ginger feature on the nose, along with peach, beeswax and cashew and a hint of nougat. The palate is ripe and textural, with a creamy richness balanced by fine acidity and excellent focus. It will continue to drink well over the coming years and pairs nicely with roast chicken with preserved lemon or thyme-crusted pork.
