The Kooyong Single Block Farrago Chardonnay 2021 comes from a 0.7 hectare sector of 23-year-old vines within the 2.76 hectare Farrago block at Kooyong's Tuerong vineyard on the Mornington Peninsula. Farrago's clay soils are scattered with ironstone pebbles, and this mineral-rich site is the source of the wine's tension and line.
The fruit was whole-bunch pressed directly into French oak barriques, 20% of them new, and fermented with wild yeasts. It then spent 11 months on lees with a single racking, a quiet, hands-off approach designed to let the character of the block speak clearly.
Lemon butter, cashew, flint and struck match sit over citrus and a touch of ripe peach on the nose. The palate shows well-defined citrus with hints of dried apricot and something a little more exotic, carried by a beautifully weighted structure and a precise line of fine acidity that runs long into a pithy, grapefruit-driven finish. It is drinking well now and has the structure to age gracefully over the coming decade.
