The Classic Red is Koerner's nod to the old Clare Valley claret tradition, and it is almost entirely Cabernet Sauvignon with a small proportion of Sciacarello, the Corsican variety, blended in. The fruit comes from the Vivian Vineyard in the Clare Valley, planted in 1998 on red clay over limestone, from a block sitting above the estate's Sangiovese.
Damon and Maddy Koerner founded Koerner Wine in 2014 and work with as light a hand as possible. This wine ferments naturally in open steel tanks, hand plunged twice a day, and stays on skins for three weeks. After pressing it spends a year in French demi-muids and a further couple of months in steel before being bottled without fining or filtration.
The style is medium bodied and structured rather than heavy. Dark berry and cassis fruit is framed by cedar, dried herbs and a fine gravelly tannin, with a savoury, velvety texture and impressive length. Very good with roast lamb, steak or aged cheddar, and it will continue to build for a decade.
