Ichiro's Malt & Grain is a World Blended Whisky created by Ichiro Akuto, the celebrated founder of the Chichibu Distillery in Saitama, Japan. Rather than drawing on a single country, it brings together malt and grain whiskies from five whisky-making nations, including Japanese malt from Chichibu, and marries them in Japan.
The component whiskies are matured in their home countries before being shipped to Chichibu for further ageing in the cool mountain climate, then blended and bottled without chill filtration or added colour. The nose is fruity and inviting, with apricot, peach, vanilla cream and a touch of toffee, while the palate layers roasted nuts, gingerbread, tropical fruit and gentle spice over a creamy base.
The finish is medium in length, with honey and butterscotch sweetness giving way to cinnamon, pepper and lingering ginger. Approachable yet genuinely complex, it is a fascinating expression of whisky made without borders.
