The Glengoyne 16 Year Old Mizunara Oak is a rare fusion of Scottish tradition and Japanese oak, released as part of the Highland distillery's Oak Masters' Series. Glengoyne is renowned for distilling its spirit slowly and maturing without peat, allowing the natural character of the malt and the wood to shine.
For this release, the whisky spent its first ten years in classic first-fill sherry and refill casks before a further six years finishing in prized Mizunara oak, a scarce and highly prized Japanese wood. That long marriage lends the whisky its signature notes of soft vanilla and sweet toffee, layered with sandalwood and a whisper of Japanese incense.
The palate is warming and expressive, with baking spice, coconut, crisp green apple and a touch of liquorice, leading into a long, floral finish reminiscent of cherry blossom on a spring breeze. Bottled at natural cask strength, it is a beautifully crafted single malt for those who appreciate patience, rare wood and depth of flavour.
