Giant Steps has built its reputation on single vineyard Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the Yarra Valley, and the Sexton Vineyard sits at the heart of that story. Planted on the steep, north facing slopes of the Warramate Ranges, the site has thin topsoil and shallow gravelly loams over a tough rocky clay base. Yields are naturally low, and the fruit that comes off it is intensely flavoured with a high skin to juice ratio.
The vineyard is planted predominantly to the Gingin and Mendoza clones, both known for producing uneven bunches with large and small berries side by side. That clonal character brings a fine white tannin and a savoury grip that balances the bright citrus running through the wine.
Expect a Chardonnay built on drive and energy, with yuzu, preserved lemon and a hint of ginger snap biscuit. Wild fermented in French oak puncheons and a large foudre with a portion of malolactic fermentation, it carries real textural dimension where fruit, cream, acidity and tannin meet on the finish. A cool climate Chardonnay for the table, and one with the structure to reward a few years in the cellar.
