Zind-Humbrecht organises part of its range by geology rather than geography, and Roche Granitique is the granite cuvée. Riesling and granite are one of the great pairings in Alsace: the soil is free draining and quick to warm, and it tends to give wines that are finely boned, floral and precise rather than broad.
The Humbrecht family has been growing in Alsace since 1620, and the present domaine was formed in 1959 when the Zind and Humbrecht families joined. Olivier Humbrecht, the first Frenchman to pass the Master of Wine examination, has led the estate for many years and farms biodynamically, letting fermentations run on native yeasts at their own pace.
The wine is taut and beautifully aromatic. Lime, green apple and white peach lead, with white flowers, a touch of citrus zest and a distinctly stony, almost flinty minerality underneath, and the finish is dry, linear and long. Serve it with seafood, roast chicken or lighter Asian dishes, and expect it to develop well over a decade.
