Domaine Sylvie Esmonin is a small, deeply traditional 7.8-hectare estate in Gevrey-Chambertin, run by Sylvie Esmonin since she returned home to vinify the 1990 vintage alongside her father Michel. Formerly known as Domaine Michel Esmonin et Fille and renamed when Sylvie officially took over in 1998, the estate is still one of very few in Gevrey-Chambertin to be run by a woman. Its jewel is a 1.6-hectare block of the legendary Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques, making Sylvie the second-largest owner of this iconic climat shared among just five proprietors.
The Bourgogne Blanc is a rare cuvée for this otherwise red-focused estate, sourced from a small 0.27-hectare Chardonnay parcel in Les Malpoiriers, just outside Meursault. Yields are deliberately low, giving the wine real finesse and mid-palate depth, with floral white-fruited aromas, a fine mineral thread and the silky, fresh, mouth-filling texture that reviewers have consistently praised as excellent value for a Bourgogne. Alcohol is typically around 12.3%.
Sylvie has farmed without chemicals since 1990 (though the estate is not certified organic), with a focus on manual vineyard work and healthy soils. Winemaking is classical and minimalist, with indigenous yeast fermentation and patient élevage in barrel allowing the character of this small Meursault-adjacent parcel to show through. Production is minuscule, and Sylvie herself describes the white as an "anecdote" in the context of her Gevrey-focused range.
