The Tradition Blanc is Domaine Rolet's take on the classic Jura white blend, bringing together Savagnin and Chardonnay in roughly equal measure. It is labelled Arbois and comes from old vines on the steep hillside sites of Château Gimont and Sous le Viaduc in Montigny-lès-Arsures, planted on the grey Lias marls that are rare within the Arbois appellation.
The two varieties are fermented separately and raised in very different ways. The Savagnin is made in the traditional oxidative style, aged for several years in barrel under a veil of flor yeast, while the Chardonnay is kept topped up in large oak foudres. They are blended a few months before bottling, giving a straw-coloured wine with intense nutty aromas of almond, walnut and roasted hazelnut, a structured, mineral palate with hints of wet stone and sea air, and bright acidity driving a long finish.
Domaine Rolet was founded in Arbois in 1942 by Désiré Rolet and has grown into one of the Jura's larger family-run estates, with around 65 hectares of vines spread across Arbois, Côtes du Jura, L'Etoile and Château-Chalon. Since 2018 the domaine has been in new hands, with farming moving towards organic practices, no herbicides or pesticides, and every bunch picked by hand. The 2018 harvest was hot and lasted around four weeks, giving concentrated, ripe wines that still kept enough acidity for tension and longevity.
