Champ Gain sits high on the slope above Puligny-Montrachet, well up beyond the more famous premier crus that hug the mid-slope. The altitude and the thin, stony soils there make for one of the leaner and more nervy sites in the village, a wine built on tension rather than opulence, and one that typically needs a little time in bottle before it opens out.
Citrus blossom, grapefruit pith and wet stone dominate the nose, with a fine dusting of toasted almond behind. The palate is taut and linear, with green apple and lemon fruit carried on bright acidity, a chalky texture through the middle and a long, saline, distinctly mineral finish.
Domaine Philippe Bouzereau is based at the Château de Cîteaux in Meursault, where Philippe, the ninth generation of the family, has directed the 18 hectare estate since 2006 alongside his brother Charles. The holdings are a patchwork of small parcels stretching the length of the Côte de Beaune, all worked with minimal intervention and picked by hand.
