The Mongeard family have been in Vosne-Romanee since 1620, and a Mongeard is recorded working at the Domaine de la Romanee-Conti as early as 1786. The estate as it exists today was shaped by the marriage of Eugene Mongeard and Edmee Mugneret in 1920, and took its current name in 1945 when the two family holdings were formally united.
Vosne-Romanee is the most aristocratic village on the Cote de Nuits, and even at village level it has a distinctive spiced, exotic quality that sets it apart. The nose here is deep and fragrant: black and red cherry, plum, violet, rose and a lift of oriental spice, with a savoury undergrowth note behind. The palate is generous and velvety, tannins fine and ripe, with a long and quietly powerful finish.
Vincent Mongeard joined the domaine in the 1970s and is the current owner, overseeing thirty hectares and some thirty five appellations. The estate holds four Cote de Nuits grand crus in Richebourg, Grands Echezeaux, Echezeaux and Clos de Vougeot, and is the second largest owner of Grands Echezeaux after the Domaine de la Romanee-Conti. Serve with duck, beef, game or truffled dishes.
